Akari lantern is sculptor Isamu Noguchi's modernization of Japanese paper lanterns. The first lamp was designed by Noguchi in 1951 in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, and was inspired by traditional lanterns used by local fishermen to fish at night in the Choyochuan river.
